Before counselling is considered, practical and emotional support would normally be offered initially through our outreach and floating support service. Counselling services are available to women who feel ready to explore and work through a particular issue that may be impacting on their life within a safe therapeutic environment. Counselling can be offered for up to 6- 8 sessions, although after review, it may be possible to extend therapy if this is felt necessary.

Although as a survivor of domestic violence, counselling may be recommended to you time and time again, it is important to recognise that the whole process can be extremely emotionally draining and it is important to prepare yourself for this. A counsellor will walk alongside you on this journey but you do the brunt of the hard work and this can be extremely demanding. It is important to look at how you can take care of yourself throughout the counselling process and this can be discussed with a support worker before you agree to a referral being made on your behalf.

Counsellors at Staffordshire Women’s Aid are all qualified to diploma level or above and receive regular supervision to ensure that they work safely and to the highest possible standards. Counselling is confidential but counsellors do have a legal duty to share information if they believe someone is at risk of significant harm.
